Smith has spent over 25 years dealing with postal laws and regulations. After graduating from the University of Michigan Law School in 1989, Mr. Smith worked for 13 years as a staff attorney with the U.S. Postal Service. In 2002, he joined Wheeler Upham, PC. Since then he has represented hundreds of clients who were pursuing claims against the Postal Service or who were facing claims by the Postal Service. He has also represented employees of other federal agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Transportation Security Administration, Department of Agriculture, Department of Interior, and the Defense Logistics Agency with their claims. Mr. Smith is the former  Chairman of the Grand Rapids Bar Association's Labor and Employment Law Section.

Mr. Smith represents postal and federal employees on a nationwide basis with matters before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Merit System Protection Board, the Postal Judicial Officer, the Office of Personnel Management, and the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Workers' Compensation. Mr. Smith has also assisted employees throughout the country with their efforts to obtain reasonable accommodation in their work places.

Mr. Smith represents postal contractorrs before the U.S. Postal Service Board of Contract appeals. Mr. Smith also represents mailers who face Revenue Deficiency Claims from the U.S. Postal Service.
